M5
For too long we have had to endure lengthy closures of the M5 motorway in Somerset. It is the only truly strategic road into and out of the south west peninsula.
Somerset and the whole of the West Country rely heavily on a functioning M5.
• To get to work, hospital and schools.
• For the delivery of our food, fuel and manufactured goods.
• To bring the tourism, a bedrock sector of our economy.
• To bring vital supplies for the defence of our nation.
The frequency, duration and impact of these closures have become unacceptable.
We call on National Highways to engage with local authorities and the relevant public sector partners across the region, to produce an assessment of the data, analysing the causes of the ever-increasing disruption and a plan to address the issues identified.
